for Carina

While I am working on a new project for completion in month 5, I've also been busy reworking an artist proof from a small edition of 5 of "Counting" I made recently. I've called this one "Who is Counting?" 

In case my project takes longer than I hope, this will be book 5 of this years work for "one a month". This copy is for my friend Carina in Finland.

By looking back at the original "Counting" , you can see that as well as a new cover , the pages have acquired some translucent overlays with additional drawings.

As you can guess, there are also some changes to the page underneath the new liftable flap which will remain a mystery to all except Carina. I am seriously thinking of using this process for more of my copies in an edition so that they are all similar but also individual and different.

 

I think there may be a name for this sort of varied edition. Please let me know what it is .

"portable" notes to Finland

Just recently I sent a little book I made while travelling in Vietnam, off to a special friend in Finland. We have never met but have sent each other little books for a while and I think I have got to know her a little through her books. Her art is so different and spontaneous, it gives me a buzz and encourages me to loosen up more.
This little book I have just sent  Carina Granlund is a little pocket size book, a little smaller than A5, into which I draw every night in the hotel while I am away . I let the new exciting experiences influence me to explore different possibilities and sometimes add ephemera like tickets or scraps of text and labels as concrete evidence of making contact with different asspects of the new culture.
When I get home I work back into some of these but also use the "Notes" as memory starters to start additional drawings to document my trip for me, I don't think they would be of much use to anyone else apart from their curiosity value.

I hope Carina enjoys the book and as usual look forward in anticipation for what she might send me.

After receiving a great little book from my mail art friend in Finland, Carina Granlund, I was inspired to use some old paper I had never used before as it is quite frail and brittle because it is so old.

Her little book of poetry was on very flimsy, rough paper but I found it refreshingly unpretentious.

The cover was made from a left over print by Helen Malone we used in a previous work "The Presence and Absence of Light" . It all worked out quite well so I gave it to a good friend who has been "refined by good books".
